The JK is Britain's premier orienteering event and this year it was being held in the South East, so not too far from home. Four days of orienteering started with a sprint around Brunel University on Good Friday and finished with relays in Pippingford Park on Bank Holiday Monday. Sandwiched between was a middle distance on Saturday and a long distance race to make sure you deserved your Easter eggs on Sunday.
It was good to see ex SOC members, Petr and Petra Junek and family popping back from the Czech Republic to remind themselves what UK orienteering's like.
Highlights from the results (top 10's):
Sprint: 3rd on M65 for Robin Smith; 6th on W55 for Jane Morgan
Sat and Sun combined: 1st on W55L for Jane Morgan; 1st on W45S for Lisa James; 3rd on W40L for Christine Currie; 3rd on W40S for Veronica Barette; 5th on W21L for Anya Crocker; 7th on W65S for Di Smith; 9th on W70L for Gill Thomlinson; 9th on M50S for Peter Smith; 10th on M65L for Robin Smith
Relays are definitely the highlight (for me) of the JK weekend. The area was great: very runnable although with a few deep ravines to negotiate. SOC results:
Men's Short (David Currie, Dan Atkins, Christine Currie): 12th
Men's Vet (Kevin Bracher, Colin Hicks, Robin Smith): mp
Women's Vet (Jane Morgan, Mary Nixon, Lisa James): 5th (fastest leg times for Lisa and Jane)
Super Vet (Terry Smith, Di Smith, David Nixon): 11th
Christine (Club Captain)
