We thought the weather might keep the numbers down - but far from it. The turnout today was fantastic with 100 people enjoying the courses set by David Currie. There was lots of chatter at the finish and download tent - always a good sign. We do hope you enjoyed the event as much as we did and we hope to see you back for the next event in the Summer series - Queen Elizabeth Country Park near Petersfield on Saturday 7th June.

Can I say a big thank you to David Currie for planning, Colin Hicks for updating the map and including the housing estate. And, as always, thanks to the volunteer helpers - without you these events can't happen so thanks for giving up your time. Finally a special mention to Kevin Bracher. This was my first go at organising an event and I couldn't have managed without Kevin's help.

Well done on a great Summer Series event

Pat on the back to all involved on the day. Also thanks to Bill Davidson and Roger Pleasant who suggested the extension into  the urban area, which adds a new dimension to the map. I am looking forward to extending the map further for a Wessex Night League event next Winter.

Mapping the Floods Lecture

By Webmaster , 9 May, 2014

The following invitation was received from the British Cartographic Society and may be of interest to members.

The British Cartographic Society (BCS) is hosting a week of events at Marwell Hotel, Nr Winchester, 24-26 June 2014 which form the Society’s annual Symposium.

BCS is a small friendly society and each year offers the local community the option to attend an evening lecture on a subject of general interest but always related to mapping.

This year the lecture will be given at 16:00 on Tuesday 24 June 2014 by Capt Robert Moore, V(Army Cooperation) Squadron, RAF who will present on Mapping the Floods: The Utility of Synthetic Aperture RADAR

The lecture will cover the support the RAF’s Sentinel R1 aircraft provided to the UK Government’s response to the large-scale flooding experienced in southern England at the start of 2014. It will provide an overview of the history of aerial photography for military purposes and the techniques used in imagery analysis, then discuss modern sensors. It will finish by explaining the fundamentals of Synthetic Aperture RADAR and how this was used in the flood-relief effort.

I would be grateful if you would advertise this event to your members.

The cost to attend is £9.00 per person and includes refreshments, the opportunity to see the display of entries for the prestigious BCS annual awards and visit the commercial exhibition involving mapping technology companies from across Europe

More information about the lecture can be found at: http://www.cartography.org.uk/downloads/mapping2014/Guest_Speaker_Flyer….

To book a place either complete and return the booking form on the flyer or register online at www.geoinformationgroup.co.uk/forms/bcs2014
