2023 Spring/Summer League 06 - Valley Park

The seventh and penultimate activity in the 2023 Spring Summer SOC MapRun League.

The MapRun will be available in the app from Friday 7th July 2023. For your run to count in the league, you must submit your results by the end of Thursday 20th July 2023. After that you can still have a go but it won't count towards the league.

NB: Note that there is a locked gate across the minor road to the southeast of control 29. The PDF map has now been updated to reflect this.

Location: Start is at the junction of Pilgrim's Way and Percivale Close in Valley Park. Finish is on the northernmost corner of the Valley Park Community Centre, on Pilgrim's Way, SO53 4ST. Plenty of free parking around the Community Centre and local shops. If full, further parking is available nearby at the Knightwood Leisure Centre (SO53 4SJ). 

Format: 45 minutes, 30 controls. Points are 10,20 or 30 per control: 10 points for 1-10, 20 points for 11 to 20 and 30 points for 21 to 30 for a maximum of 600 points. There is a penalty of 10 points per minute late back or part thereof.

MapRun app: Use the MapRun6 or MapRun V7+ app. Do not use the original MapRun app as it does not understand the score format. See the MapRun website for guidance on configuring your phone. 

Map : The map is a 1:7500 OpenOrienteering map. The PDF can be downloaded below.

Terrain: The course is mostly around residential areas, with some use of the local woodlands. It is possible to cross the larger areas of woodland, though controls are not located in these areas as mapping of footpaths can be less reliable.

Safety: There are several road crossings, most of the residential roads are relatively quiet. Knightwood Road runs through the middle of the map, which can be busy at busier times of day. Care should also be taken when crossing Castle Lane and School Lane. Under 16s must be accompanied by an adult. Fences are not to be climbed, whether marked on the map or not-this also includes squeezing through holes in the fence!

Social: Thursday 20th July 2023 from 7.30 pm at The Cleveland Bay on Pilgrim's Way (SO53 4ST), just across the road from the finish.
