Highfield, Southampton MapRun January 2024

The activity will be available in the MapRun app from Thursday 4th January for six months. If you wish to compare notes on the course, please complete the activity before the social on 11th January.

Location: Starting and finishing on the junction of Hawthorn Road and Oakhurst Road, just over the road from Highfield Primary School and close to The Crown Inn. There is some on-street parking but this can be restricted during office hours. There is a lot of parking close by on the university campus (access via the northwest end of Chamberlain Road) but this is only available after 6pm on weekdays. There is a frequent bus service to the university campus. 
Format: 45 minutes, 25 controls. Points are 10, 20, or 30 per control: 10 points for 1 - 10, 20 points for 11 to 20, and 30 points for 21 to 25, for a maximum of 450 points. There is a penalty of 10 points per minute late back or part thereof.

Map: The map is a 1:7500 OpenOrienteeringMap. 
Terrain: The course is around residential areas and primarily on paths. There are a few controls on the university campus. There may be quite a lot of students around during the working day – please take care. There is also some building work on campus, particularly close to control number 2. 
Safety: All people doing this MapRun activity in the evening must wear hi-vis, a headtorch, and bring a spare torch or batteries. There are a couple of busy roads on the course. Please take care when crossing and try to do so via permanent road crossings.  There are a few areas that are frequented by dog walkers and cyclists. Please take care around them. Under 16's should be accompanied by an adult. All fences are not to be climbed whether marked on the map or not – this also includes squeezing though holes in fences!
