Orienteering Returns to Southampton Common

Something we thought could never happen took place on Saturday 20 June. SOC, in collaboration with the Hawthorns Wildlife Centre, inaugurated the permanent orienteering courses on Southampton Common. So that you understand what an amazing event this was, I must tell you about the history of orienteering on the Common.

SOC doesn't win the Furrow Hoppers Trophy

...thats about all we know. I don't suspect we were last either, but until the results appear on the Wimborne site, we'll pretend we were 4th (they announced the top 3 on the day). 2 cross-country/urban, 1 urban and 1 cross country/urban map memory courses had to be run 3 times each by teams of 5 people.

The team (as organised by Simon Whipple) was:

Simon Whipple, Matthew Whipple, Paul Whipple, Philip Eeles, Sam Massey

New Permanent Orienteering Course

Firstly I would like to thank all those involved with the setting up and launch of the permanent orienteering course on Southampton Common, on Saturday 20th June. A lot of hard work was put in prior to the event particularly by Jean Velecky, ably supported by Gill Thomlinson and Philip Eeles. Secondly, thanks to Lin Hand and Andy Welch at the Hawthorn Centre and to Jon Dyer-Slade, Head of Neighbourhood Services at Southampton Council who kindly agreed to open it.

Club Night on Tuesday 7th April

Club night at Wide Lane this coming Tuesday 7th April 2009.

The evening begins at 18:30 for those who want to do the training run and 19:30 for the main meeting.

At 19.30 firstly we will be indulging in some outdoor (not too serious) orienteering exercise - so bring your trainers, jogging gear and you may need to bring a torch, as it is dark by about 8.15pm!

Secondly we will retire indoors to have a look at the JK 2009 areas. So if you have old maps of any of the areas please bring them along.
I will print off some copies of the examples on the JK website
